     Before we discuss specific power supply circuits, we must first define the power supply design problem with a general set of requirements or specifications. Power supplies provide operating power for electrical and electronic devices by taking an input voltage and converting it to an appropriate output voltage. In order to properly design a power supply, we must define the input and its expected variations along with the output and the acceptable variations for it. The specifications.
     
Key Power Supply Specification parameters

Input voltage: DC or AC, frequency and range for AC, nominal input voltage and variation
 Output voltage: DC or AC, frequency and range for AC, nominal output voltage and allowable variation
Dropout voltage: minimum input/output voltage differential
Output current: continuous and maximum output current
Ripple voltage: maximum % of allowable peak-to-peak ripple
Efficiency: output power/input power
Percent load regulation: % output change / % line change
Percent line regulation : % output change / % line change
Noise filter: attenuation shown in dB
Generated noise: line and radiate, amplitude and frequency
Failsafe features: current limiting, thermal overload
